About My Style

About John's "moody" style of photography.

My style, as defined by my friends, is "moody". I love using light to highlight small parts of a photo while leaving shadows relatively dark and mostly as outlines of subjects. Clouds have always been my friend in creating a mysterious and dark look to my photos. However, in the case of my Florida collection, I loved getting to use the bright sunlight to create light pastel colors in contrast with the post-storm surf and sand-filled air.

Limited detail in the shadows while using the clouds to bring out the faint outline of the mountains

When it comes to portraits, I try to keep the same principles but with slight variations. Photographing people requires at least a little detail in the shadows, but I really try to get a gradiated look where there can still be a slight element of mystery. I even from time to time have the subject be mostly an outline with only the very outer edges being illuminated.

Shadows are still very dark with soft gradients from lights to darks

My photography style has been constantly evolving. This is made evident if you look at my North Carolina collection compared to my Colorado collection. I favored a much different color grading style in North Carolina than I do currently, and what I do now will most likely be quite different from what I'll be doing 6 months from now. But I'm really just enjoying creating content that I can call my own and having people know me for my style of photography. I can't wait to see where photography takes me!

Just always shoot manual.
